Myanmar released 302 prisoners of conscience in its latest amnesty, a minister said Saturday, after the move was hailed by the West as a promising sign of reform in the army-dominated nation.

"This release was not according to the demand of any person or any organisation. We released them according to the true benevolence of the government," home affairs minister Lieutenant General Ko Ko told reporters.
