Mickelson makes his move as Tiger stumbles at Pebble

Published on 13 February 2012 - 12:40am
More about:

Playing partners Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were headed in opposite directions early in the fourth round of the PGA Tour's Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Sunday.

Mickelson vaulted into the lead with a superb opening stretch of one eagle, three birdies and no bogeys in his first six holes en route to a five-under 31 to stand on 14-under for the tournament at the turn.

Woods, on the other hand, was struggling to keep his ball in the middle of the fairway as the 14-time major champion had three consecutive bogeys to close his front nine for a two-over 38.

Third round lead Charlie Wi stumbled out of the gate with a double bogey on the first hole. South Korean Wi, who has in the past folded under late pressure, started the day with a three-shot lead over playing partner Ken Duke.

Mickelson made the turn with a two-stroke lead over Wi and Kevin Streelman, both on 12-under. The crowded leaderboard features six players within three shots of the lead.

Mickelson and Woods were in the second to last group -- a marquee pro-am lineup also featuring American football star Tony Romo, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback who flashed his game by outdriving his playing partners on several holes.

This marks the 30th time Woods and three-time Pebble Beach champion Mickelson have gone head-to head with Woods owning a 13-12-4 advantage.

Woods' troubles started on the par-5, 502-yard second hole when his tee shot sailed into the second fairway bunker on the right side. He managed to recover and par the hole.

As he has done all week, Woods spent some of his time on the greens talking to Romo and helping him line up tricky putts which for the most part the NFL star would make.
