Western Saharan activist Haidar hospitalised

The Moroccan activist Aminatou Haidar has been admitted to hospital on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Ms Haidar went on hunger strike a month ago, because she has been denied entry to her home in Western Sahara.

The Moroccan authorities confiscated her passport and put her on a flight to Lanzarote. Her condition is said to be critical but she reportedly says is she not prepared to end her hunger strike. Ms Haidar is a campaigner for the independence of the disputed territory of Western Sahara from Morocco.
