US offensive begins in Helmand valley

Published on 2 July 2009 - 9:42am
More about:

The US army has begun a large-scale offensive against the Taliban in the southern Afghan province of Helmand.  Around 4000 troops with helicopters and tanks have entered the Helmand valley, which is largely in the hands of the Taliban.

It is the first large US offensive in Afghanistan since President Barack Obama took office in January. The military operation in Afghanistan is one of the spearheads in his anti-terrorism policy.

The offensive in Helmand comes just a month ahead of the general elections in Afghanistan. An army spokesperson has called it a risky operation, in which the first 36 hours will be crucial
