The governor of Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province, Asadullah Hamdam, has been dismissed. Sources in the provincial capital Tarin Kowt have confirmed to Radio Netherlands Worldwide that the government in Kabul sacked him at the weekend.
The reason for his dismissal remains unclear. However, there are rumours that two complaints of corruption have been made against him, for which he must appear before a judge. It is also rumoured that Mr Hamdam has lodged an objection to the charges.
Asadullah Hamdam was appointed governor of Uruzgan by President Hamid Karzai in 2007. His predecessor was dismissed at the request of the Netherlands, which believed he was not completely reliable.
The governor is the first formal Afghan point of contact for the Dutch troops and diplomats at Camp Holland, the main Dutch military base in Uruzgan. Dutch representatives attended weekly meetings with Mr Hamdam.
Sources in Tarin Kowt and Kabul say the name of the new governor will be announced in around ten days.

I understand that Asadullah Hamdam has been declared innocent of all charges. Nonetheless, may I say that corruption remains a huge problem in Afghanistan. Local war lords remain very powerful and they have dangerous liasons with central authorities, as has been repeatedly reported in the past. I hope this situations changes for the better soon. Just to inform you the governor of Uruzgan has now been cleared of all charges by Muhammed Isaq Aloko, the attorney general chief of Afghanistan. It has now been proved that he was innocent and that all the charges were untrue, the charges were investigated by a jury and a committee who also visited uruzgan province to investigate them. In the clearance letter the attorney general stated that the Afghan government apologises to Assadullah Hamdam over the false accusations made against him. The attorney general also informed the interior ministry that the accusations that were made were FALSE and UNTRUE. He also stated that Assadullah is entitled to compensation if he wishes to.

Certainly he was better than others also he could be your saviour too but you should be thankful and send blessing to karzai because he still has his freedom! Also don’t worry he already earned enough in his post to secure his future financially. Its not worrying me that he faced 13 charges in a lawless land of Afghanistan, and was dismissed. Its worrying me what if government finds that he was working as a governor of uruzgan and had multi thousands dollars salary each month plus his governorship allowance and his private earnings from his post and businesses in Afghanistan BUT he and his family claimed income support and housing benefit illegally! I say thanks to karzai because he has at least granted his freedom. I am really sad to say he may face charges regarding benefit fraud and dishonesty.
After looking into this closely, i think Jan Mohammad has had a great hand in the dismissal of a honest governor. This is exactly what is wrong with third world countries such as afghanistan, getting rid of their honest politicians and bringing in corrupt ones in this case would be handing the power back to the popalzaie tribe, where Jan Mohammad is their Senior. Recently their has been a campaign created by the western powers to stop corruption, but they have started off with a big negative. Jan Mohammad is a well known senior among his tribe, his actions in the past have been compared to one of dictators. I Do very much feel it for Afghanistan, a country that has been fighting for a peacefull day for over 30 years. And actions like these will only postpone that day.
I know that jan mohammad khan and his friends have tortured Uruzgan alot because they have killed lots of people and have also took alot of money. He was also a govener of Uruzgan and was not educated and was also killing alot of people the netherlands troops did not like him so they told karzai to sack him so karzai did but then after he got sacked he gave jan mohammad khan a oppartunaty to be the adviser of one minstry in Afghanistan so jan mohammad khan took the job, he also has 4 wifes which he made them marry him by force. I think he wants to take his position back to be Uruzgans governer thats why he is doing all of this to Assadullah Hamdam. If he is not educated then how would he advise the minstry.there is a famouse dialogue in pashto language which says "The cow is black but the milk is white !"which means if you know something but cant tell the truth to anyone.
Why is it always people with vision to make Afghanistan a better place blamed or accused of corruption? Is it because they are doing a good job to built their own nation or is it that because the foreign officials are not getting their own way.....
I am not surprised that Dutch Troops are disappointed that he has left his post because I think he did a great job to be bring the Afghan people together. I would not to be a Governor of such a place where you are counting your seconds to when you will be shot but he did because he is a man of Afghan people.
I totally agree with you there. I think Karzai needs to take a deep look into his own soul and make Afghanistan a better place by getting rid of people who are really to blame.
After listning to the interview by Belle the Dutch journalist i have high doubts that the governor really did take part in corruption as she did mention that a certain group wanted to take revenge on the governor for disarming them 1 month ago. It is highly plausable that Jan Mohammed Khan also has a part to and role to play in this as in the other article written by radio netherlands that he has previous problems with the governor locking up corrupt party members of his, and seeing as Karzai is also from the popalzai tribe just like Jan Mohammed Khan he is unable to turn his back on his tribe. Afghan internal politics play important attention to the tribal system. Something which it is obvious to say Karzai has been unable to not influence his decisions and actions.
