UNSG calls for more accountability on Sri Lanka human rights

Published on : 28 October 2011 - 12:20pm | By International Justice Desk (Photo: AFP)
More about:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reemphasized Wednesday the importance of accountability issues in Sri Lanka related to conflicts with the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The comments came during a meeting with Mahinda Samarasinghe the Special Envoy of the President of Sri Lanka on Human Rights, as part of the UN's ongoing dialogue with the Colombo government.

The secretary-general also stressed "the importance of an inclusive national dialogue aimed at achieving genuine political reconciliation, as well as ongoing progress with regard to recovery and resettlement efforts in the north" where large numbers of internally displaced persons currently live.

Earlier this week, Australian Attorney-General Robert McClelland refused to allow a war crimes case against Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa despite charges that were filed by an Australian citizen claiming that during the 2009 Sri Lankan civil war, civilian targets were intentionally bombed by military forces.

The charges follow closely behind a call last week from the International Commission of Jurists, Australian Section (ICJA) for Australia to investigate a top ranking official in the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canberra for war crimes violations allegedly committed by the Sri Lankan Navy during clashes with the LTTE in 2009.

Earlier this month, Samarasinghe, announced the Cabinet of Ministers has adopted the National Action Plan  for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights. Last month, Ban sent a report to the UN Human Rights Council accusing Sri Lankan troops of killing tens of thousands of civilians during the civil war. In April, a UN panel of experts on Sri Lanka found credible allegations of war crimes committed during the country's war with the LTTE, warranting further investigation.

UN stop fucking harassing Sri Lanka for war crimes that LTTE has done

Shiva 29 October 2011 - 5:07pm

You are either a war criminal or a hate criminal. There is International and Human rights law. You racists Sinhalese may not understand it. Your racist Rajapake brothers have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity according to the US Ambassador Ms. Butenis - WikiLeaks. Rajapske is the worst criminal of the 21st Century worse than Pol pot, Saddam, Gaddafi and Milosevic, all add together.

This country in the name of terrorism killed many ethnic minorities. It was a pure test book example of a country, who committed horrendous crime. What happened in Sri lanka was a well planned and coordinated “Genocide of Tamils” and “Ethnic cleansing of Tamils”. Raping of women and killing of children by the armed forces. Clearly, a war without witness!
The entire so called civilized WEST kept watching this massacre without doing anything.
This is not the first time; this country has massacred the Tamil population. They have done it systematically for the period of 5 decades. Now, the country is ruled by 4 brothers and 350 of his immediate families. The elder Rajapuckser, is the Speaker of the house. The second brother is the Sri lankan President. The third brother is the Defense minister, the fourth brother is the Economic development minister. This family looted millions of tsunami funds, every development fund that goes through this government is looted by this family. The entire underworld drug Lords are managed and refuge by this family. UN, IC, Amnesty, US, UK, Europe and Canada have declared the president and his family are guilty of murdering 40000 of innocent Tamils, in the name of wiping Terrorism.
Put these Murderers behind bars, lock them up and throw the keys into the ocean.

I would like to ask you whether you were blind if you were living in
Sri Lanka. Didnt you see how the Sri Lankan Army cared for all those tamil people? It is the leaders of the countries who accuse Sri Lanka of war crimes who should beaten and killed for the western countries have committed the most number of war crimes. The whole Sri Lankan population will stand up against this UN. First see how the army treated the tamils before you speak. Don't level false allegations at our army because you have a grudge against Sri Lanka. I am sure that all the Sri Lankans are against your views.

westernmind 29 October 2011 - 7:28pm

Anupama. You should look at yourself infront of the mirror and ask if you are talking the truth. You are hirlarious like rest of the sinhalese propandists trying to justify rajapakse's , the despot's , tyrant's very serious crimes against humanity including genocides of more than 100000 innocent tamil civilians including todlers, raping of innocent minority tamil women and girls. Human rights and rights of gays are world high priorites. long live harper.

Anupama 30 October 2011 - 5:26am / Sri Lanka

Mr.Westernmind can you please reply to my comment below if you don't mind

Anupama 30 October 2011 - 5:24am / Sri Lanka

I know that iam speaking the truth because i live in Sri Lanka and have two friends who have been living in LTTE controlled areas. They told me how our army came and rescued them from the clutches of the LTTE. Besides i would like to ask you as to how most of the Tamils in the former LTTE controlled areas voted for Rajapakse's party in the local government elections? There is no such conflict between sinhalese and tamils in Sri Lanka now because iam half tamil.

Shiva 29 October 2011 - 5:06pm

If the Army really cared for Tamils, why the Sri Lankan regime is denying for an independent war crimes and human rights investigation?

The world is sick of Sinhala malicious propaganda to help their Apartheid regime.

Anupama 30 October 2011 - 5:31am / Sri Lanka

The government is denying a war crimes investigation on it because there is no proof for war crimes. As if we don't know the number of war crimes the western countries have done. Don't try to cause conflict between the Tamil and Sinhalese who are living peacefully now.

This is all getting too boring for the world community to be bombarded on so called human rights violation and crimes against humanity purported have occurred in Sri Lanka where any evidence is lacking. However, the United Nations and some countries of the West do not want to realize that the allied forces of the west that has committed worst war crimes on earth on those countries in the Middle East. The Secretary General of the UN has to act on these crimes rather than looking for unfound “red herrings” in Sri Lanka. UN cannot divert world attention on in wars promoted by the Western countries to destabilize those under redeveloped countries with natural resources where the West exploit.

Sri Lankan 29 October 2011 - 4:30am / Sri Lanka

exactly, it is the western countries especially america who has done an innumerable number of war crimes. The UN is putting the blame on the
Sri Lankan Army for all the dirty things that the LTTE has done.
Sri Lankans should raise their voice against this dirty acts by the UN.

Leela 28 October 2011 - 4:50pm / Sr Lanka

Arthur Dowd of Australian Section (ICJA) was a terrorist symphathyser for Dowd participated in an event organized by LTTE agents in 2005 at Ryde Civic Centre, Sydney with prabakaran's picture hanging in the podium. Moon's panel of experts are the same. Moon is deaf and blind for all what FUKUS (France, United Kingdom and United States) had done in Libya. Why? Leela

Shiva 29 October 2011 - 5:10pm
