The High Court of Tokyo has rejected compensation claims by ten Chinese victims of atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in the 1930s and 1940s, reports The UK Guardian. The 20 April ruling comes at a time of tense diplomatic relations between the two countries. Upholding a 1999 decision by a lower court, the Tokyo high court ruled that international law does not allow foreign nationals to seek compensation for acts committed in wartime. It added that compensation claims were settled under peace treaties with individual countries, including China.
