Telemarketing on your doorstep

Published on 22 March 2010 - 9:25am
More about:

The Dutch consumer association (Consumentenbond) argues there is a need for a “Don't call on me” register for consumers to go with the existing “Don't call me” register.

Since it was introduced in October 2009, four million Dutch people have joined the Don't call me register to indicate they do not want phone calls from energy companies, telecom companies or other telemarketers.

However, according to the Consumentenbond, companies are increasingly using door-to-door salespeople. A spokesman said: “we can't prove it, but it looks as though they are using data from the Don't call me list to select addresses.”

The Consumentenbond wants a register where people can indicate they don't want salespeople ringing their doorbells. It is also calling for an extension to 14 days of the doorstep sales law which allows the buyer eight days “reflection time” within which articles can be returned.
