St Eustatius official branded "slave driver"

Published on 8 August 2009 - 9:43am
More about:

The opposition on the Netherlands Antilles island of St Eustatius has accused Government Commissioner Henk Kamp of colonialism.

Opposition leader Clyde van Putten says Mr Kamp, who is responsible for the islands of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba, is behaving like a "slave driver".

"He is authoritarian and tells us what to do in our own homes", says Mr Van Putten. Mr Kamp dismissed the allegations, saying he has always been open to other ideas. The government commissioner is involved in helping the islands of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba become special municipalities within the Dutch state.
