Spain mourns Basque terror attack victim

Published on 20 June 2009 - 8:15pm
More about:

In the city of Bilbao in Spain's Basque Country, hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of the policeman who was killed by a car bomb on Friday. Among them were Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain and senior members of the Spanish government.

The attack in Arrigorriaga, near Bilbao, is assumed to have been the work of the Basque separatist movement ETA. After the funeral, a silent march was held in Bilbao. Similar marches in protest at ETA violence also took place in other Spanish cities.

When the new socialist government took office six weeks ago in the Basque Country, ETA threatened a new wave of violence. The murder of the police officer is the first deadly attack carried out by the separatist movement in almost seven months.
