A second Irish bishop has offered to resign in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal within the Irish Catholic Church.

James Moriarty, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, was auxiliary bishop in Dublin between 1991 and 2002. Last month, an enquiry led by Judge Yvonne Murphy into child abuse in Ireland found that the Roman Catholic authorities in the Irish capital covered up child sex abuse by priests for decades.
 

According to the Murphy Report, Roman Catholic leaders in the Dublin diocese did not report sex abuse to police, choosing instead to move paedophile priests and protect the reputation of the church.
 

Earlier this month, the resignation of Donal Murray, Bishop of Limerick, was accepted by the Pope. Murray was auxiliary Bishop of Dublin from 1982 to 1996.
