The Belgian health authorities have reported that a 44-year-old woman has died from A(H1N1), also known as Mexican flu. She is the second Belgian national to die as a result of the influenza pandemic.
The health authorities say the woman, from Wallonia, first presented with symptoms of the disease on 11 September. When her condition worsened, she was admitted to hospital but she continued to deteriorate. In July, a 34-year-old woman from Antwerp died after contracting A (H1N1).
According to the latest World Health Organisation report, there have been more than 300,000 laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza A(H1N1). The WHO said there have been 3,917 deaths reported to the organisation.
