The 2010 Paralympic Winter Games ended on Sunday night with a massive fireworks display.

The games for athletes with physical and visual disabilities, held this year in the Canadian city of Vancouver and the town of Whistler, attracted a record number of visitors. More than 230,000 people bought tickets to watch over 500 athletes from 44 countries compete. Russia was the big winner: altogether, its athletes won 38 medals, 12 of them gold. Its closest rival, Germany, won 24.

The next Paralympics will be held in four years’ time in the Russian city of Sochi.
