Rift between Thailand, Cambodia deepens

Published on 12 November 2009 - 8:09pm
More about:

Relations between Cambodia and Thailand have further deteriorated.

Phnom Penh on Wednesday expelled a senior Thai diplomat and Bangkok has responded by expelling the Cambodian first secretary. Last week, both countries recalled their ambassadors.

The rift opened between the two countries between in the wake of Phnom Penh's appointment of former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as economics adviser to the government. The situation deteriorated further on Wednesday after Cambodia refused a request for the extradition of Mr Thaksin.

Thailand regards Mr Thaksin as a criminal; the former prime minister was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2008 but he fled the country before his sentence was announced.

Thailand says all joint programmes are on hold and a review of two road construction projects has been ordered.
