Referrals from ICTY to Sarajevo

Published on : 25 July 2005 - 12:00am | By International Justice Tribune
More about:

Five more ICTY suspects had their trial referred to the Sarajevo war crimes chamber last week. Judges at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) ruled on 20 July to refer the cases of the following defendants: Zeliko Mejakic, commander of the Omarska camp, Momcilo Gruban, head of guards at the camp, Dusan Fustar, head of guards at the Keraterm camp and Dusko Knezevic, who had no official post but travelled to and from the two camps. Each defendant has 15 days from the referral decision to file a notice of appeal. Two days later, the ICTY also decided to transfer Gojko Jankovic, who prosecutors say was a key paramilitary leader in the Foca region, to the court in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Jankovic is the eighth defendant at the ICTR to have his case referred to the court as part of the ICTY's completion strategy. Six more defendants are currently awaiting decisions on their transfer.
