Portuguese police discover explosives

Published on 6 February 2010 - 6:33pm
More about:

In Portugal, police have found 500 kilos of explosives and bomb-making equipment in a house in the central town of Obidos.

The searched the house following a tip from neighbours after two Spanish-speaking tenants hurriedly left the building. The two are still at large. It is thought they may have fled after police found detonators on two men in a van in the vicinity.

Spain says the house was being used by members of ETA, the Basque separatist movement, but Portugal has not confirmed this.

At the beginning of January, two members of ETA were arrested in Portugal as they were driving a van loaded with explosives towards a Spanish police barracks just over the border. They are due to be extradited to Spain in the near future.
