Initial reports say that voting in the parliamentary and presidential elections in Mozambique passed off peacefully. The first results are expected in a few hours.
Analysts expect another victory for Frelimo, the party that has been in power for the past 34 years. Sitting President Armando Guebuza is almost guaranteed to win a second term in office.
Frelimo's position has been strengthened by a seriously divided opposition. Seventeen parties and two coalitions are contesting the elections. The most important opposition party, Renamo, split recently and analysts say most of the opposition votes are likely to to be divided between Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique, the party formed by a disaffected Renamo supporters.
According to the Southern African Development Community, turnout was about 50 percent but European observers say turnout was between 30 and 35 percent.
