Two key decisions handed down this month by the Supreme Court have clarified the legal fate of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. On 14 September, the court confirmed that Pinochet will be stripped of his immunity for Operation Colombo; the next day it annulled all proceedings against him for Operation Condor. It now looks impossible that Pinochet will be prosecuted in Chile for the most serious charges against him (see IJT-31). This is the third time that the 89-year-old has escaped justice for health reasons. In the Columbo case, he will also have to undergo medical examinations to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.
