US President Barack Obama is on a two-day visit to Europe.
The theme of his visit to Germany and France is the commemoration of the World War II allied invasion of Europe.
On Thursday evening, the president arrived in the city of Dresden, which was destroyed in an allied bombardment in February 1945. Mr Obama met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Dresden and is now visiting the former Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald. On Saturday, he will attend a commemoration of the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944 which gave a decisive turn to the fighting in Europe.
Mr Obama arrived in Dresden from Cairo, where he gave his long-expected speech to the Muslim world. He said he wanted to make a new start in relations between the US and Islam and explained his Middle East policy.
