New HIV variant discovered

Published on 3 August 2009 - 9:13am
More about:

Scientists have discovered a new variant of the HIV virus, the first to originate from gorillas. Until now, the virus has always been traced back to chimpanzees. HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The new subtype was discovered in a 62-year-old Cameroonian woman living in France. She has never been in contact with gorillas or meat from the jungle and this, say experts, would tend to suggest she was infected by another human.

Doctors believe the new subtype will soon be discovered in more people. Because it deviates from the known strains of the virus, it is unlikely that it will be discovered by the standard tests. Therefore, it is expected to spread further.
