New FARC video criticizes government

More about:

Colombia’s rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has released a new video criticizing Santos, the country’s newly elected president.

The video shows Alfonso Cano, the leader of the FARC, whose real name is Guillermo Saenz Vargas, discussing the recent elections and criticizing the policies of the new government.

"The triumph of [Juan Manuel] Santos on June 20 guarantees the continuation of his policies and strategies," Cano says.

Santos is the former defense minister and has won the presidential elections last month.

He promised to continue the policies of Alvaro Uribe, the former president. He was unable to run for re-election after a constitutional court barred him from seeking a third term.

"He [Santos] has shielded the former government from being taken to national or international justice", Cano says.

He also added that the new president is merely rearranging the current regime.

"The whole electoral apparatus is rotten. It is characterised by terrorist violence in a substantial way."
