Amnesty International says it is giving Myanmar's democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, its highest honor, the Ambassador of Conscience Award.
The human rights watchdog says it hopes the honor will help deter Myanmar's military government from imposing any harsh new punishments on Suu Kyi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Suu Kyi's opposition party won national elections in 1990 but military rulers refused to relinquish power. She has suffered house arrest for 14 of the past 20 years and is currently on trial for allegedly harboring an American in violation of her house-arrest rules. The offense carries a potential five-year prison sentence.
Irish band U2 is publicly announcing the award Monday night at a Dublin concert.
