The charge sheet against wartime Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic has been revised down from 15 counts to 11, the prosecutor of the UN court that will try him for genocide said Wednesday.

"Today, we have filed an amended indictment against Ratko Mladic," said prosecutor Serge Brammertz at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

"What we have is an operative indictment filed this morning. It is an indictment very close to that filed against Mr (Radovan) Karadzic as the charges are the same," he stated.

Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb political head and Mladic's commander in chief, was arrested in Belgrade in 2008 and is on trial in The Hague on 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for atrocities committed during Bosnia's 1992-95 war in which 100,000 people died.

Mladic faces charges including persecution, extermination and murder, deportation, inhumane acts, unlawfully inflicting terror on civilians and taking of hostages.

He is accused of masterminding the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of about 8,000 Muslim men and boys, Europe's worst atrocity since World War II.

He is also charged over the 44-month siege of the capital Sarajevo from May 1992 in which 10,000 people died.

Brammertz said the prosecutor's office was considering trying Karadzic and Mladic together.

"The amended indictment has been prepared and put before judges -- it has been done with the objective to put the two cases together at short notice. So it would make sense."

"It is for sure a possibility, but it's much too early to make a decision and ultimately it's a decision for the judges."
