Mittal Steel suspends Omarska memorial over ethnic divisions

Published on : 13 March 2006 - 1:00am | By International Justice Tribune
More about:

Plans to build a memorial at the former concentration camp in Omarska have been temporarily put on hold by the main investor, Mittal Steel [IJT-39], which bought the iron ore mine in 2004 where approximately 3,000 Bosnians endured deprivation, physical torture and murder in 1992. The steel giant announced the suspension of the project on February 20. Plans to build the memorial were announced in November 2005, following intensive mediation by Soul of Europe among the various communities living in Prijedor. But the memorial has been increasingly criticized of late. The mayor of Prijedor, who feels the memorial will fuel ethnic tensions, has refused to support the project. The most surprising opposition comes from an online petition with approximately 1,200 signatures circulated by the Bosnian diaspora. This seems to highlight the rift between victims living abroad and those who have returned to Prijedor since the end of the war in 1995, including several noteworthy leaders who support the project. Faced with such dissent from both sides, Mittal Steel decided to suspend the project, "expressing the hope that the people of Prijedor will find a solution which can be acceptable for everybody".
