London could prosecute Tamil tiger

Published on : 4 February 2008 - 12:00am | By International Justice Tribune
More about:

According to the Sri Lankan newspaper Sunday Leader, the British Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) plans to prosecute a former commander of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Karuan Amman, for war crimes and human rights violations. According to the CPS spokesperson, the Metropolitan Police could open an investigation after having been alerted by reports from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said, "Several agencies are involved and I can only confirm that the Metropolitan Police is one of them." On January 25, the former head of the LTTE was sentenced to nine months in prison for having entered Great Britain using a forged diplomatic passport. He was arrested on November 2, 2007 by immigration services, but there has been no extradition request from Sri Lanka.
