Kuwait claims terrorist attack thwarted

Published on 11 August 2009 - 8:15pm
More about:

Authorities in Kuwait say they have thwarted a terrorist attack on the largest United States army base in the country. Six people have been arrested.

Since their arrest, the six have admitted they wanted to carry out an attack during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. The six, who are reputed to be members of an organisation allied to al-Qaeda, admitted they had also considered attacking the headquarters of Kuwait’s security services.

The military base is located in southern Kuwait and is, in part, used as a base of operations for the US mission in Iraq. It is home to 15,000 military personnel.
