Kenyan cattle raid ends in dozens dead

Published on 16 September 2009 - 12:31pm
More about:

At least 35 people in Kenya, including women and children, have been killed after a raid aimed at stealing cattle. Members of the Pokot tribe attempted to steal cattle from Samburu tribespeople in the Laikipia district, a plateau in the northwestern Rift Valley.

The two communities have been at war with each other for some time and the situation has been made worse by Kenya's recent drought. The two groups often clash over the use of the few local water holes.

When police arrived, the latest cattle raid had already led to 21 deaths and at least 14 members of the Pokot were killed in the ensuing gun battle with officers. As yet, there are no reports as to whether there were any police casualties.

The Kenyan authorities are deploying hundreds of officers to the area to restore order. Last week, 15 people died in other clashes between the two tribes.
