Karadzic calls Srebrenica death toll inaccurate

Published on 23 July 2009 - 3:05pm
More about:

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia wants to drop a number of indictments against Radovan Karadzic in order to speed up the legal proceedings against the former Bosnian Serb leader.

Chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz intends to bring 11 charges against Karadzic but the judges say this is too many. If necessary they will reduce the list themselves. Prosecutors are also being asked to indicate which of the 500 proposed witnesses are not necessary for the case.

Karadzic is accused of genocide committed after the collapse of the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica, and war crimes during the siege of Sarajevo between 1992 and 1995. He is calling on his assistants to check the tribunal's list of Srebrenica murder victims which, according to Karadzic, may include gross exaggerations and inaccuracies.
