Nine years to the day after the International Criminal Court (ICC) statute was adopted, Japan became the 105th state to ratify the court's founding treaty, on July 17. Following Cambodia and South Korea, Japan's arrival reinforces the Far East's representation within the ICC. And above all, Japan is now the ICC's biggest financial backer, with approximately 19% of its budget, according to a press release by the Coalition for the ICC, a New York-based NGO.
