Islamic militants raid UN offices in Somalia

Published on 20 July 2009 - 5:40pm
More about:

Islamic militants in Somalia have raided the offices of three United Nations organisations.

The rebels, who belong to the al-Shabaab militia, raided the offices of the UN Development Program, the UN Department of Safety and Security and the UN Political Office for Somalia. They seized office equipment but left the personnel unharmed. The offices are located in the towns of Baïoda and Wajid.

The militants had earlier branded the UN organisations as "enemies of Allah and of Muslims" because they are blocking the establishment of an Islamic state in Somalia.

A civil war has been raging in Somalia since 1991. Al-Shabaab militants, who are fighting against the government army and peace troops from the African Union, currently occupy large areas of the south and middle of the country.
