Iranian state television has reported that the country has tested two new short-range missiles: the Fateh-110 and the Tondar-69. Both have a range of approximately 160 kilometres.
Iranian authorities said the tests were intended to “preserve and improve the deterrent capacity of the armed forces.” They added that a further test – of a Shahab-3 missile theoretically capable of reaching Israel - is to be held on Monday.
The tests have come at a time of increasing tension in the Western world. On Friday, Iran admitted it was building a second facility, shortly to become operational, for the enrichment of uranium.
United States President Barack Obama and other world leaders threatened harsh sanctions at the news. They fear the facility might be used to make nuclear weapons, However, Iran has denied this and said United Nations inspectors are welcome to visit the complex.
