Iran protests set to continue for 5th day

Published on 17 June 2009 - 8:45am
More about:

Supporters of Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi plan to stage new protests today against the outcome of the presidential election. The demonstrations, involving tens of thousands of people, have now been going on in the capital Tehran and elsewhere in Iran for four days in a row.

Sitting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won re-election last Friday with a landslide majority, but Mr Mousavi's camp is accusing the government of electoral fraud. The Iranian authorities have agreed to a partial recount, but the protesters are keeping up the pressure.

The Iranian government has summoned the ambassador of the present European Union president, the Czech Republic. Iran is angry that EU foreign minister have voiced serious worries about the situation and are calling for an inquiry into the election. Iran says the EU is meddling in its internal affairs. United States President Barack Obama has again said he is deeply troubled by events in Iran.
