See also ICC - Summary

  • Birth of a Treaty: 160 States took part in the « United Nations diplomatic conference of plenipotentiaries on the establishment of an International criminal court ». 17 intergovernemental organisations, 14 United Nations agencies and 124 NGOs attended the working sessions of the conference. The Statute of the International Criminal Court was adopted during the night of the 17th and 18th July 1998 by a vote of 120 for, seven against.
  • Interview with William Pace: For several years, William R. Pace, a member of the World Federalist Movement, has organised the efforts of the Coalition of NGOs for an International Criminal Court (CICC), an umbrella group for several hundred NGOs which decided to coordinate their efforts, while remaining free to adopt the ton and opinion they wished.
  • USA gives seal of approval: December 31, 2000 was the deadline for the accession of all States to the Treaty of Rome.
After two years of dithering, the Clinton administration has finally signed up. But the United States\' stand against the scope of the International Criminal Court remains steadfast, insisting that its citizens, particularly its soldiers, must be granted immunity at all costs.
  • French Adaptation to the ICC: the Most Bitter Pill Remains to be Swallowed: Senator Badinter\'s draft bill on cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) was voted in unanimously by the Senate on 12 February. But the text, which centres on procedural matters, does not tackle the need for substantial reforms of the criminal code, including the definition of war crimes.
