Indonesia refuses to send maids to Kuwait

Published on 15 October 2009 - 1:13pm
More about:

Indonesia has temporarily stopped sending domestic helpers to Kuwait following numerous complaints concerning abuse and failure to pay salaries. Around 500 women who are waiting for assistance to return home have received shelter at the Indonesian embassy in Kuwait City.

Many of the domestic helpers, who are paid as little as 125 euros a month, say they are beaten when they ask for their salaries. Around 60,000 Indonesian domestic helpers work in Kuwait.
