Hadzic arrives in the Netherlands

More about:

Former Croatian Serb rebel leader Goran Hadzic arrived Friday at Rotterdam airport in the Netherlands on his way to face war crimes charges before a UN court, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

A plane carrying Hadzic, the last remaining fugitive wanted by the UN war crimes court, touched down shortly after 2:30 pm (1230 GMT), it said.

Serbian Justice Minister Snezana Malovic earlier Friday signed an official order authorising Hadzic's transfer to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), where he faces 14 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the 1991-95 Croatian war.

On the run for the last seven years, Hadzic, 52, was arrested Wednesday in the idyllic mountain region of Fruska Gora near the northern city of Novi Sad. He is the last of 161 persons indicted by the ICTY.

He was expected to be transferred to the UN's detention facility in The Hague shortly.
