A court in Guatemala City has ruled that former president Alfonso Portillo can be extradited to the United States.
Washington suspects Mr Portillo of laundering large sums of money.He is believed to have embezzled several million dollars of government funds through banks in the United States and Europe.
Alfonso Portillo was president of Guatemala from 2000 to 2004. After his term in office expired he fled to Mexico, which repatriated him to Guatemala in 2008.
He was arrested earlier this year at the request of the United States.
