Guantanamo detainee arrives in US

Published on 9 June 2009 - 4:06pm
More about:

The first detainee from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to be transferred to the United States has arrived in New York.

Ahmed Ghailani, who was arrested in Pakistan in 2004, is to stand trial for his part in the bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, in which 200 people died. He is the first inmate of the prison to be tried before a US court.

President Barack Obama wants to close the prison on the island of Cuba by no later than January 2010. It still houses approximately 240 individuals, most of whom have been detained since the 11 September attacks on New York in 2001. However, although many other countries have called for the prison to be shut down, few are prepared to accept any of its inmates.
