Two armed men have shot dead a Greek anti-terrorist police officer in Athens. The gunmen escaped on a motorbike.
The officer was not in uniform and was in a car outside the home of an important witness in a case against the ELA or Revolutionary People's Struggle group. In the 1970s, the ELA was responsible for bombings of Greek government buildings and of United States facilities in Greece.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for today's shooting of the officer, but the police believe it was a terrorist attack. Violent incidents targetting members of the Greek police have increased enormously since officers shot a teenager dead during rioting in December.
