In its latest edition of the Pontifical Yearbook, the Vatican has revealed that the number of baptised Roman Catholics in the world rose 1.7 percent in 2008, by just under 19 million. The yearbook notes that the numbers increased in Africa and Asia, but fell throughout the rest of the world.
In 2008, there were 1.166 billion Roman Catholics in the world. In 2007 the figure was 1.147 billion. The Vatican claims Roman Catholics make up 17.4 percent of the world's total population of 6.7 billion.
