The trial of Alex Wiens, a 28-year-old German, who stabbed a pregnant Egyptian woman to death in court, has started in the Germany city of Dresden.
In 2008, Marwa Sherbini reportedly asked the defendant to let her child use a playground swing he was sitting on, but he refused and called her an Islamic terrorist. She took him to court and he was fined 780 euros for defamation. When he returned to the Dresden court for his appeal on 1 July he stabbed her 16 times with a kitchen knife. Ms Sherbini, who was three-months pregnant with her second child, bled to death in the presence of her husband and their three-year-old son.
The case and the slow reaction of German politicians and media caused an uproar among Muslims, and led to anti-German protests in Egypt and Iran. Chancellor Angela Merkel later tried to calm the situation by offering her condolences to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian government has urged the killer be sentenced to life in prison. The trial is expected to conclude by 11 November.
