Georgia condemns Putin trip to Abkhazia

Published on 13 August 2009 - 11:55am
More about:

Georgia has condemned Wednesday's visit by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to Abkhazia, describing it as provocative and likely to raise tensions in the region.

It is Mr Putin's first visit to the breakaway Georgian region since Russia and Georgia fought a five-day war last year. Today (Thursday) is the first anniversary of the hostilities coming to an end.

Russia, Nicaragua and several breakaway republics recognise the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The rest of the international community still view both regions as part of Georgia.

During his trip, Mr Putin pledged about 350 million euros to strengthen Abkhazia's borders. Part of the money will be spent upgrading Russian military bases in Abkhazia.
