Gambia expels UNICEF envoy

Published on 16 February 2010 - 2:41pm
More about:

Gambia has expelled the envoy of the United Nations children's organisation UNICEF.

On Friday Kang Min-Whee received a letter ordering her to leave the country within 24 hours. UNICEF recently reported on human rights violations and restrictions on press freedom in Gambia.

The organisation also reported on HIV/AIDS among children, a major taboo in the African country. President Yahya Jammeh has repeatedly stated he can cure the disease with a herbal mixture and his mystical powers.
