The residents of the French overseas territories of Martinique and French Guyana are voting in a referendum today on whether or not they want more autonomy.
If a majority are in favour of more autonomy, relations between France and the local authorities will be reviewed. Full independence is not on offer.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy decided on the referendum after weeks of strikes on Martinique last summer. The industrial action was taken because workers were angry about the high unemployment and high cost of living.
No referendum is being held on the French island of Guadeloupe, as the local authorities say tension is running too high.
