Former Taiwanese president gets life sentence

Published on 11 September 2009 - 1:12pm
More about:

Former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has been sentenced to life imprisonment on corruption charges. He was found guilty of money laundering, embezzling government funds and accepting bribes while in office.

Between 2000 and 2008, he syphoned off amounts including over two million euros of public money. He has always maintained that he is innocent and has been targetted in a witch hunt because of his anti-Chinese policies.

His wife, Wu Shu-chen has also been given life for embezzlement and the couple's son and daughter-in-law have been sent to prison for about two years.
