The first Guantánamo Bay detainee has appeared in civil court in the United States.
The Tanzanian Ahmed Ghailani is suspected of involvement in the bomb attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, which killed more than 200 people. He was captured in Pakistan in 2004 and was taken to Guantánamo Bay two years later. He pleaded not guilty in the New York courtroom.
President Barack Obama intends to shut down the US marine base this year, but most countries are unwilling to house the detainees.
