Fires dot Dutch weekend

Fires raged at several locations throughout the Netherlands at the weekend. In the northern city of Groningen, a 66-year-old man died in a fire at his home. A home care worker discovered the blaze and called the fire service, but attempts to rescue the man failed. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

In the village of Stitswerd, in the province of Groningen, a converted farmhouse was totally destroyed in a suspected chimney fire. One resident of the house was treated for smoke inhalation.

Further south in the city of Tilburg, six people were treated for smoke inhalation after fire broke out in their apartment building. All the residents escaped the blaze without further injury. The fire is thought to have started in a refrigerator.

In the southern town of Geldrop, nine people were forced from their homes fire broke out in a row of houses. Most of them were able to return soon afterwards. Three were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
