In several European cities, environmental activists have held demonstrations in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Summit to be held next week in Copenhagen.
In the United Kingdom capital London, 20,000 people took to the streets. At one point they were addressed by Environment Minister Ed Miliband, who promised that the UK would push for a far-reaching pact at the summit.
In the German capital Berlin, demonstrators dressed as United States President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Hu Jintao symbolised the effects of climate change by sitting in a large aquarium as it filled slowly with water.
Protests were also held in Paris and Dublin.
Official representatives from France, Belgium and Luxembourg set off for the summit from Brussels by train. They said they wanted to promote climate-friendly travel and noted that flying to Copenhagen would have discharged six times as much CO2 into the atmosphere as the train journey.
