Europe gives Serbia an ultimatum

Published on : 8 May 2006 - 12:00am | By International Justice Tribune
More about:

As long as Ratko Mladic is at large, the negotiations for Serbia's entry into the European Union will remain on hold, according to an announcement on May 3. The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli Rehn, told Radio Free Europe that the discussions will resume "only if there is dramatic improvement in Belgrade's cooperation" with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which wants to try the general for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Mladic was indicted in 1995, as was the former head of Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadzic, who is also on the run. Karadzic is the subject of a similar ultimatum that Europe gave Bosnia-Herzegovina on May 3. Last year, this strategy helped Europe get Croatia to hand over Croatian general Ante Gotovina to the ICTY.
