EU: More time for French farmers

Published on 5 August 2009 - 9:29pm
More about:

The European Commission says it is allowing France two months' grace to recoup subsidies improperly paid to vegetable and fruit growers. A total of about 330 million euros in state aid was given to the French farmers from 1992 to 2002.

The European Commission earlier ruled the subsidies to be in breach of EU regulations and ordered Paris to recoup the money by August. The deadline has now been extended to the end of September. The French vegetable and fruit growers are furious and are refusing to repay the money.

"....recoup the money by August."......Then what? The French farmers will riot on the streets, the French government will give in to the farmers, and then the EU will pass the loss onto the EU's public. Food is not cheap to produce.
