EU and US increase pressure on Karzai

Published on 16 November 2009 - 3:52pm
More about:

The European Union is increasing the pressure on the re-elected Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, to do something about the corruption in Afghanistan.

EU foreign Policy coordinator Javier Solana says Brussels will carefully scrutinise President Karzai's efforts in this field.

Mr Solana says it is important that he appoints trustworthy and honest ministers to his new cabinet, since this will determine whether the European Union can work with Afghanistan and whether more EU funds will be allocated.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made similar remarks. She demanded that the Afghan president set up an anti-corruption committee and a tribunal to try frauds and swindlers.

She also wants more transparency about exactly what happens to the US money invested in Afghanistan. If that remains unclear, she warned, the funding will stop.
